Hito to Hikari no Katachi (Shape of People and Light) (2002)

The cultural border between countries is becoming more unclear than it used to be. Moreover, the borders are shifting and merging into each others' cultures. As a result of movement of people, this borderless culture, or a blend of cultures, has been expanding. The borderless culture has created a totally new place where any traveller can belong to and travellers can exchange their views towards the world. The place does not have a name or is not a country, however, the place exists in travellers' minds.

I believe this place has become more and more important for travellers' identities, as the globalisation proceeds, as well as where they are actually from. The place is organic and has evolved. I would like to describe the place, as one of those who belongs to the place as well as a witness.

I attempt to visualise this place, by means of photography, by depicting these travellers' inner thoughts. Especially, I want to describe the relationship between the inner thoughts and light.

In my work, light represents hope. Without light, we can not see our path to move forward. The light gives us happiness and encourages us to keep seeking new places in mind.
