About HAFENSAFARI
Every year HAFENSAFARI - guided tours to temporary installations - attracts some 3000 visitors to undiscovered corners of the Port of Hamburg in Germany. Sculptures, Concepts, Projections, Paintings, Photography, Dance, Architecture, Landscape Art, Film or Video, Comic and other forms are impressed during this event. Tomoko participated in HAFENSAFARI 3 with her photography installation, Hand Down Point, dedicated for a particular area of the port.
Hand Down Point
My inspiration for Hand Down Point stems from the specific location where the piece is now installed. I was taking a slow walk along the canal to find the key to understanding the location of HAFENSAFARI 3. As I looked at the other side of the canal, the inspiration came. The place appeared to me to be timeless as well as eternal, while it must have witnessed dynamic changes in its utility, popularity and landscape itself. I imagine that this place has had, and will continue to have, such universality, capacity and potential. I feel that this important location is very positive and full of hope. I understand the location as a crosspoint and a bridge between the past and the future, carrying various factors at each stage of its history since the canal was first constructed. It has changed; it will change; it will remain a crosspoint of the past and the future.
